Abstract:

Welcome to the IEEE Symposium on 3D User Interfaces 2008 (3DUI 2008), organized in Reno, Nevada on March 8-9, 2008. The symposium is co-located with IEEE Virtual Reality 2008 and with the symposium on Haptic Interfaces. 3DUI 2008 is the third international symposium focused on the topic of 3D UIs. It builds on successful 3DUI workshops in 2004 and 2005, as well as the IEEE 3DUI Symposiums in 2006 and 2007. Although a recent area of research, 3DUI is already a very well established topic and rapidely expanding. The submissions covered a variety of approaches ranging from handheld devices, desktop solutions, gesture, sound, haptics, augmented/mixed reality, to immersive systems.
This year, the program co-chairs received 67 submissions (45 papers and 22 technotes) in all areas of three-dimensional user interfaces. Each paper or technote was reviewed by at least two reviewers from the international program committee and two external reviewers. The review summary written by the primary reviewer provided the basis for a discussion among the reviewers when necessary. Reviewing was double-blind, i.e. the identity of the authors was known only to the program chairs and the program committee members responsible for choosing external reviewers for the submission. The acceptance rate was very selective at 28 % (31 % for papers and 23 % for technotes), and only 19 submissions were accepted (14 papers and 5 technotes). In addition, this year the proceedings also include 2 pages presentations for each of the 18 posters presented during the symposium.
We wish to thank all the persons who made 3DUI 2008 possible. Special thanks go to the program committee members and the reviewers for their insightful and thorough reviews of the submitted papers in a very short review period. We want to thank the posters chairs Raimund Dachselt, Robert Lindeman and Kouichi Matsuda who did handled the hard job of managing the posters. We also acknowledge the support by IEEE, the IEEE Visualization and Graphics Technical Committee as well as the VR steering committee. Most of the organization of IEEE 3DUI as well as local arrangement is shared with IEEE VR. We are grateful to Bill Sherman and the IEEE VR organizing committee for taking care of the organization of IEEE 3DUI 2008. Many thanks to James Stewart of Precision Conference Systems for his support of the reviewing process. Thanks also to Torsten Möllen and especially Meghan Haley for managing the printing process. Finally, we thank all the authors for their excellent submissions, without which this symposium could not exist.
We hope that this symposium will continue to connect researchers of all backgrounds in 3D user interface research and be enjoyable, interesting and stimulating for the participants. Please enjoy the 2008 3DUI Symposium !
