Visual Analytics and Alternatives

Visual Analytics

This research focuses on systems that support the interactive visual analysis of big or complex data. Such analysis enables users to leverage their existing domain or other knowledge, including common sense, during the analysis process. Visual Analytics also is a key part of creating visualizations to communicate insights gathered from the data to others, including stakeholders.

Immersive Analytics

Immersive Analytics uses the power of immersive systems, such as Virtual and Augmented Reality setups and large display to support Visual Analytics processes. A key component is the ability of the user to lay out the visualization of their data in 2D or 3D space as needed to solver their current analytics tasks.

3D Visualization

For some types of data, including spatio-temporal data, 3D visualizations have been shown to offer clear benefits. We investigate how interaction with such 3D visualizations, including Space-Time Cubes, can facilitate Visual Analytics processes.

Difference Visualizations

When managing multiple versions of a given document or dataset, gaining a quick overview of the differences between such versions is critical. Here we investigate difference visualization methods that facilitate seeing what is different between versions.

Alternatives & Scenarios

Solving difficult or ill-defined problems, such as identifying new insights from big or complex data sets or designing a new artifact, typically involves an exploration of alternatives. Yet, current tools do not support alternatives well in both creative and analytical work. Our work explores new systems to make it easier for analysts and designers to manage different alternatives and scenarios in their work
