Abstract:

Purpose: To investigate the efficacy of visual training with stimulation in patients with dry age-related macular degeneration (AMD).
Method: The Medical Eye Trainer (M.E.T.) was tested in 67 patients with dry AMD. By using the training system, the entire visual system is treated. A moving grid is displayed on a standard smartphone or tablet. The training was carried out once a day for 90 seconds over a total period of two months.
Results: The Medical Eye Trainer (M.E.T.) significantly improved visual function after two months. The results of a questionnaire, which was used after the therapy, also showed a satisfactory stabilization or improvement of the findings.
Conclusions: The M.E.T. represents an effective additional treatment option for patients with dry AMD without interfering with established treatment methods.
